EVRAZ Charity Fund sponsors education for social service workers and for parents

Ostrava. Care for handicapped people at the present time offers a whole range of modern means for treatment and rehabilitation of serious diseases. Besides instruments and material equipment this also includes new methods and techniques of treatment. One of them is basal stimulation that was presented to parents of handicapped children and to social workers of some non-profit organizations from the Moravian-Silesian region at the end of February and beginning of March. Both courses for 30 attendants were financed by the EVRAZ Charity Fund.

Basal stimulation is a treatment concept that is popular mainly abroad. The main objective of this concept is improving the perception of the handicapped patients and assisting them with developing their own identity. Basal stimulation enables patients to establish communication with the surrounding environment, to manage orientation in space and time, and by doing so it improves the functions of the organism. No extra equipment is necessary for its application.

Further expansion and application of basal stimulation is most commonly prevented by lack of funds for education of professional workers. Therefore, the EVRAZ Charity Fund has decided that besides the funds worth CZK 8.9 million donated to 60 projects of non-profit organizations from the Moravian-Silesian region this year it will support directly also other activities focusing on handicapped children. Funding of, so far, two basal stimulation courses is part of these activities. “As an HR director myself I know that the basic precondition for success is to have experts in my team. That is why continuous self-education is important not only for companies, but also for institutions focusing on helping handicapped children,” said Hana Jelínková, a member of the EVRAZ Charity Fund board of trustees.

Fifteen parents of handicapped children were acquainted with basal stimulation at a workshop held on Saturday, March 3, at the AKORD Community Center in Ostrava-Zábřeh. After the theoretical part, the parents had an opportunity to practice the exercises and techniques under the supervision of experienced lecturers and they discovered one more chance for improving communication with their child and finding a way toward him despite her serious handicap.

Thanks to the EVRAZ Charity Fund, fifteen social service workers, special educators and nurses had received the same training on the last weekend in February, a week before the parents. The two-day basic course in basal stimulation provided information on this method to workers from elementary schools and institutions from Ostrava and the surrounding locations. “This course is interesting and important for our work, but it is expensive,” said Darja Waczyńska, the head nurse from the Children Rehabilitation Center at the Ostrava Municipal Hospital. “And so we are glad that the EVRAZ Charity Fund provided the opportunity of further education to our employees.”
