Ostrava 18.10.2013 Representatives of EVRAZ VÍTKOVICE STEEL and TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY have made a friendly wager about which of the teams, sponsored by the respective companies, will score the first goal of the teams’ first joint ice hockey match. The wager was made during the steel derby of the HC VÍTKOVICE STEEL and HC Oceláři Třinec teams on Friday October 18, 2013 in ČEZ Aréna, an Ostrava sports stadium. Each side waged thirty thousand Czech crowns, meaning that the whole sixty thousand Czech crowns go to the winner, the selected project in its region.
Jan Czudek, CEO of TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY and Dmitrij Ščuka, Chairman of EVRAZ VÍTKOVICE STEEL made the bet by handshake at the beginning of a joint hockey match between HC VÍTKOVICE STEEL and HC Oceláři Třinec on October 18, 2013 in Ostrava. Whose team scores the first goal of this duel will be the winner.
Both sides have made available 30,000 CZK. The total sum of 60,000 CZK will go to the organization and its project nominated by the winner of the bet. In the event that “guests“ win, the final amount will be donated for purchasing an ultrasound device to treat soft tissue at the rehabilitation facility, which is part of the Podlesí Hospital in Třinec. In the event that “hosts“ win, the funds will be used to purchase a phototherapy lamp to treat neonatal jaundice at the children’s ward at City Hospital Ostrava (Fifejdy).
"A sense of social responsibility for the livelihood in the Region goes without saying for TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY. Therefore we hope that top-level sports competitions can have impacts in other ways. I strongly believe that the result of our wager will be of benefit to a wide range of people, just as fair play is more than about simply winning, but also involves those who really need our help," says TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY CEO, Ing. Jan Czudek.
“We are convinced that this wager is not about the winner but about helping bring about positive things. As with last year we would like to, in addition to our support of the Vítkovice hockey team, do something more for others. I believe in our team and hope that the final sum will remain in Ostrava,” says Dmitrij Ščuka, Chairman of the Board of EVRAZ VÍTKOVICE STEEL.
Last year, the subject of a similar bet between representatives of the general partners of both teams was regarding which team was ahead after completion of the first round of the extra-league. The final sum of 60,000 CZK was sent to four different kindergartens in the Třinec region to purchase polytechnic construction kits, which would help stimulate the technical imagination of children, as well as improve their motor skills.
