Vítkovice Steel: the history of steel power since 1828
In 1828, a story was stirred up in the heart of Ostrava that continues to this day. Vítkovice Steel, formerly known as Rudolf’s Steelworks, was born out of a vision to connect the world with durable and quality steel products. This vision has since become the driving force behind a generation of steelworkers.
The beginning of the steel era:
- 1828: The founding of the company that laid the foundation for today’s giant.
- 1830: Lighting of the first puddling furnace in Austria, a revolutionary step in the steel industry of the time.
- 1913: The heavy section mill expands its product portfolio to include steel sections for construction purposes.
- 1971: the 3.5 Quarto sheet metal mill pushes the technological boundaries and enables the production of top-quality sheet metal.
New millennium, new challenges:
- 2001: Founding of VÍTKOVICE STEEL, a.s., which continues the rich tradition of steelmaking in Ostrava.
- 2005: the company acquires EVRAZ in privatisation and becomes part of an international steel group.
- 2014: VÍTKOVICE STEEL, a.s. changes ownership and becomes part of a group of private investors.
- 2015: closure of the steel plant and strategic transition to production from imported slabs with emphasis on greening of operations.
Vítkovice Steel today:
The company focuses on the production of the highest quality heavy plate, sheet, sheet piles and forgings, which are used in a wide range of industries. Thanks to innovative technologies, emphasis on environmentally friendly production and a fair approach to business partners, Vítkovice Steel maintains its position as a leader in the European steel market.
Our plates are used to create, for example, bridges, which are our great passion. Sheet metal is used for steel and bridge structures or as structures for water management and flood protection. We burn our billets on state-of-the-art equipment, which is also why they are often used for machine parts where a high level of precision is required. Quality control of products is carried out in our own accredited testing laboratories, which have state-of-the-art testing facilities.
The story of Vítkovice Steel is one of steel strength, human ingenuity and the constant pursuit of innovation. It is a story that inspires and motivates generations to build a stronger and more resilient future. Steel has an unlimited lifespan and is the world’s most recyclable material.
Vítkovice Steel: A tradition that binds. Innovation that pushes boundaries. Steel that builds the world. Steel is the future.
