BRIDGES WITH THE SIGNATURE OF VÍTKOVICE STEEL

These days, the last plates for the motorway bridge with a working name Rojek are being dispatched from VÍTKOVICE STEEL. The bridge which will be a part of motorway D 47 will lead across the Polanecká junction, across the Rojek pond and across the Czech Railway track. Currently, 208 meters of the bridge with a weight of 790 tons has been manufactured and dispatched to the site. The bridge structure is being made by VÍTKOVICE STROJÍRENSTVÍ, which will receive up to 5 500 tons of special Atmofix plates from VÍTKOVICE STEEL.

,,Plates made of Atmofix are currently one of the most readily used materials for erection of various types of bridges – road bridges, railway bridges, and footbridges,“ said Ivan Harazím, Technical Director of VÍTKOVICE STEEL, a. s. ,,These plates are characterized by high strength, resistance against climatic effects and by long life. Unlike other types of structural steel, where content of copper, chromium and possibly nickel is not desired, Atmofix uses low quantities of these additives to achieve the desired anti-corrosion properties while complying with the required mechanical properties (these plates are made in three quality grades), explained Ivan Harazím. ,,Increased resistance of the plate surface against atmospheric corrosion is ensured by natural layer of aerugo formed by oxides and this layer protects the plate against further corrosion.”

Erection of the Rojek bridge started this August and it will be completed in the Spring 2006. But we are already preparing production of other jobs. ,,This October we signed a contract with the VÍTKOVICE Bridge Building Shop for supply of some 3500 tons of plates made of Atmofix. The plates will be used for erection of a motorway bridge upstream of the confluence of Ostravice and Odra rivers and we will start dispatching the plates in February 2005,“ said the Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO, VÍTKOVICE STEEL, Mr. Vladimír Bail, Ph.D. ,,This year, direct supplies of plates for bridge structures make almost five percent of all supplies to the Czech market and their financial volume reaches some 280 million CZK,“ added Bail. From plates designed for erection of bridges in the Czech Republic, plates from Atmofix represent almost 40%.

Important references made of Atmofix include railway track on the Rudná Street in Ostrava from 1970’ or the bridges in Svinov in Ostrava from 1980’, and also most of the bridges of motorway D 47 which currently is being erected. „As a civil engineer I consider the quality and properties of the material and I like Atmofix,“ says Jan Choleva, Head of the Bridge Division I at ODS – Dopravní stavby Ostrava, who has a lot of experience with bridge steel structures based on Atmofix. A very important project, whose completion in the Spring 2003 was accompanied by an important symposium on the topic of bridge steel structures erection, was a motorway bridge across the Odra river with a total length of some 405 and weight of 4 300 tons.
